LeRoy “Ding” E. Reetz, 97, of Bloomer, passed away June 24, 2018, at Colfax Health & Rehab. He was born on September 6, 1920, in Bloomer, the son of Louis and Philomena (Bemel) Reetz. Ding attended schools in Bloomer and graduated from Bloomer High School in 1939 and was active in football, basketball and baseball.

Ding was employed at Peters Meats in Chippewa Falls until he was drafted in the US Army Air Corps being deployed October 23, 1942 for three years where he served in the South Pacific Theater of World War II. He was honorable discharged in October of 1945 and retuned home to Bloomer to a changed world.

Ding married Bernice “Toni” Lang on August 27, 1946, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Bloomer, where he was a lifelong member. He was employed at various companies including Reetz and Boese Meat Market until he became a mail carrier in Bloomer. He enjoyed his rural route 3 for 15 years in New Auburn, Town of Sampson. He acquired many friends through the years with the “lake people” with Christmas always being a special time to serve others.

Ding’s hobbies included deer hunting, fishing, and being an avid Packers fan. Taking his turn at civic duties as many in his family had done preciously, he was elected Mayor of Bloomer in 1980 serving for six years. He was instrumental in the creating the baseball field on Priddy Street and the expansion of the Bloomer Memorial Golf Course to 18 holes.

Ding is survived by his daughters, Jane (Marvin) Zwiefelhofer of Bloomer and Ann Reetz-Johnson of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Charles (Tricia) Zwiefelhofer of Bloomer, Lee Roy (Margarey) Zwiefelhofer of St. Anthony, MN, Nancy Zwiefelhofer of Eden Prairie, MN, and Katie (Dave) Paulson of Cameron; great-grandchildren, Tanner Rognholt, Rillie Zwiefelhofer, and Bryce, Gavin, and Estella Zwiefelhofer.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers; and three sisters. Ding will be greatly missed by his family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and fellow parishioners at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Bloomer with Fr. Victor Feltes celebrating the Mass. Burial with Military Honors rendered by the Bloomer VFW & American Legion will immediately follow Mass at St. Paul’s North Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church.
